John Gregory Smith was a railroad tycoon, politician and a war-time governor of Vermont who was born in St. Albans VT on July 22, 1818.
Smith was a pioneer railroad builder in Vermont and a leading lawyer who graduated the University of Vermont in 1841 and subsequently Yale Law School.
Smith became associated with his father in law and railroad management and after his father's death in 1858. he suceeded to the position of trustee under the lease of the Vermont and Canada Railroad. At the same time he entered politics and was also one of the originators of the Northern Pacific Railway enterprise for which he served as president from 1866 to 1872. Under his leadership five hundred and fifty-miles of the road would be built.
His political career began as a St Alban's representative from 1860-1862 and became the speaker of the House. He gained popularity and was nominated for Governor in 1863 and was re-elected in 1864.
During the American Civil War, Smith suceeded in securing legislation which provided to the sick and wounded Vermont soldiers with quality medical care. He also authored legislation recogning the righ of soldiers in the field to vote in elections.
John Gregory Smith served as Governor of the State of Vermont from October 9, 1863 to October 13, 1865.
